Capabilities

Generates all-atom proteins and complexes under programmable constraints. Input: 'conditioners' you compose - symmetry, shape, substructure, natural-language-style class conditioning; output: structures plus sequences, since it models both. Also does sequence design on given backbones and side-chain packing.

When to use it

Unmatched for constraint-driven generation (symmetry, shape, substructure) if you are academic. For a company, the conditioner idea is worth studying but the weights need a deal - plan on RFdiffusion/Genie 2 instead.

Commercial Licensing

Commercial rights — may a company use it?

Restricted

Licence as writtenApache License 2.0 (code); Chroma Parameters License (weights, academic/non-profit only)

The README's License section is explicit: code is Apache-2.0, but 'Chroma weights are freely available to academic researchers and non-profit entities' under the Chroma Parameters License, and anyone wanting to use the parameters 'beyond the scope of the rights granted in the License (including for commercial purposes)' is told to contact [email protected]. So commercial use needs a negotiated licence from the company.

Some commercial use is possible, but a component, dependency or condition needs a paid licence or carries obligations.

Commercial cost — is commercial use free of charge?

Paid commercial licence

Free for academics and non-profits; a company must contact Generate Biomedicines' licensing address for terms. No price is published, so assume a negotiated fee.

Price and rights are separate: this panel is about money, the panel above is about permission.

  • Commercial OK ≠ Free of charge. A tool can be licensed for company use and still need a paid licence for a dependency (BindCraft → PyRosetta).
  • Free download ≠ Commercially licensed. Weights you can download at no cost may still forbid commercial use (AlphaFold 3).
  • Unverified ≠ Commercially permitted. If no published statement settles it, treat it as unknown — not as a yes.
  • Every component counts. Each status considers the code licence, the model-weights terms, required dependencies and any terms of use.

Model Weights

Open weights. A separate weights licence is Not documented as its own field; where weights carry different terms from the code, that is stated in the licence explanation above.

Dependencies

Not documented as a separate field. Any dependency that affects commercial use (for example a paid PyRosetta licence) is named in the licence and cost explanations above.
